The Miami Project to Cure ParalysisSummer 1994
The Fort Lauderdale
law firm of Krupnick Campbell Malone Roselli Buser Slama & Hancock
has been a long-time friend and steadfast supporter of neurological
research. Senior partner, Jon Krupnick, has been indispensable to the
stability and growth of The Miami Project, and now serves as an active
and highly productive member of our Fundraising Cabinet.
His firm has played an integral role in the founding of our successful
Legal Advocates Society, now in its third year. In May, Krupnick and
his firm once again stepped forward with a generous donation to support
research at The Miami Project.
The Krupnick firm specializes in personal injury law, and they have
represented many clients with severe head or spinal cord injuries (SCI).
Jon Krupnick originally became aware of The Miami Project through his
representation of Scott Mickler, an SCI patient who was injured in an
automobile accident in 1978. When the case was concluded in 1983, Barth
Green, M.D., inquired as to whether the firm would be interested in
supporting spinal cord research that was being done at the University
of Miami School of Medicine. Both the firm and Mickler made initial
donations to the research project that was then in its infancy. Thereafter,
the firm established a tradition of making a donation towards spinal
cord research any time they concluded a case that involved serious spinal
cord or head injuries.
After Scott Mickler's death in 1990, Krupnick and his firm, moved by
Scott's tremendous courage, strength and hope, mobilized their colleagues
in the legal field to establish the Scott M. Mickler Foundation Fund.
The Mickler Fund provides stipends for support of SCI individuals who
participate in Miami Project research activities.
In presenting the $50,000 donation, Krupnick explained the philosophy
behind his firm's philanthropy: "It is a tremendous burden to represent
people who have been catastrophically injured. We try to achieve for
them a fair financial recovery, but we are very aware, as in the case
of Scott Mickler, that a financial recovery does not begin to address
the problems faced by the injured person and their family. Our firm
strongly believes that The Miami Project, where doctors and scientists
work together, will one day succeed in conquering spinal cord injury
and paralysis. When we are dealing with our clients and their families
who are facing these terrible burdens, we are proud to tell them that
we support The Miami Project in it's important work and that we are
confident that The Miami Project will ultimately be successful in finding
a cure. We will continue to support your research in the years ahead."
