FORT LAUDERDALE, FLORIDA - November 16, 2001 - One week before a trial on damages and after a lengthy mediation, Gilbert Southern, and the Department of Transportation settled with former Dolphin star David Griggs' estate for more than $10 million. In a liability trial in June, a jury found that Griggs' death was primarily caused by improper road construction and faulty maintenance which caused drainage problems resulting in the huge hole that Griggs hit. Griggs died on June 19th, 1995 when he lost control of his car while exiting the Florida Turnpike and proceeding onto ramps adjacent to Interstate 595 in Davie. Griggs was 28. Griggs' trial team was headed by Walter G. "Skip" Campbell, and included partner Scott S. Liberman, Ivan F. Cabrera and Sean J. Greene, all of the Fort Lauderdale plaintiff's trial law firm Krupnick Campbell Malone Roselli Buser Slama Hancock McNelis Liberman & McKee. Lead attorney, Walter G. "Skip" Campbell applauded the settlement and said, "A terrible tragedy, which should have been avoided, befell a good family. No amount of compensation will bring happiness to this family, but thanks to our legal system, the family can feel certain that justice and fairness has prevailed." The improper road construction cited by the jury has not been corrected as of this date. Ivan Cabrera of Krupnick Campbell Malone Roselli says, "The roadway defect is a time bomb waiting to go off and maybe other lives can be saved by this unfortunate loss." At the time of Griggs' death, he owned a Gold's Gym in Delran, New Jersey and would most likely have opened more gyms said Paul Grymkowski, one of Gold's Gyms four founders and a witness for the plaintiffs. Griggs is survived by daughter Jasmine Griggs, now seven, who was nineteen months old at the time of the accident. At the time of his death, Griggs was a starting linebacker for the AFC-champion San Diego Chargers. Krupnick Campbell Malone Roselli is a well-known plaintiffs' trial firm located in Fort Lauderdale specializing in personal injury, product liability, medical malpractice, aviation, civil trial law, toxic torts, environmental litigation, and Civil RICO. |
