Senator Teaches Students Legislative Process CORAL SPRINGS, FLORIDA - November 28, 2001 - Involving the entire class in a role-playing exercise, State Senator Walter G. "Skip" Campbell demonstrated the importance of water rights and the legislative process. Senator Campbell was a guest speaker recently at Coral Springs High School where he spoke to Mr. Deveney's environmental class. By helping to educate the students about the history of water rights, the issues associated with those rights, and the legislative process, Senator Campbell set the stage for a full scale mock legislative debate. Students were assigned to play various legislative roles with Senior, Jessica Cassidy, as Senate President. The "senators" debated the pros and cons of allowing a private entity to purchase water rights in the state of Florida. When the Senate bill was opened up for a final vote, the bill calling for private ownership of water rights was defeated. "You are all advocates and every one of you can and should speak on these issues," said Senator Campbell. He encouraged all of the students to register to vote when they turn eighteen, pick their own party affiliation, select an issue and get involved in the political process.
